Who We Are

Hello, and welcome to the website of the Maryland Gamma Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA)! We serve all health professionals in the uniformed services and are located at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.

Founded in 1902, AOA is the oldest national medical honor society in the country and one of two current ones for allopathic medical students. Its singular purpose is to recognize and perpetuate excellence in the medical profession. Election is an honor signifying a lasting commitment to scholarship, leadership, professionalism, and service. Membership is lifelong, conferring recognition for a physician's dedication to the profession and art of healing. Students are eligible for election to the society in the spring of their third year. Criteria for election include overall academic achievement, contributions to the university and community, and a high standard of character and personal conduct. An induction fee payable to the national office is required, as are modest annual national dues that include a subscription to Pharos, the society's publication.

You can learn more about Alpha Omega Alpha on the national organization website.  If interested, more history about AOA is available here.
